Villareal, Emilia Voorhis, Albert George
Voorhis, Helen (Biggs)

(The Pagosa Springs Sun April 6, 1923) Helen Voorhis and Albert Voorhis. The entire community was saddened the first of the week when it became known that Mrs. Helen Voorhis and her brother-in-law, Albert Voorhis, had passed away at their home in O'Neal park, only eighteen hours apart, from pneumonia following an attack of influenza. Both contracted the flu last week but as it appeared to be of mild form, they believed that they had sufficiently recovered to continue their daily chores about the ranch home. As a result, each was stricken with Pneumonia on Sunday and rapidly declined despite all that medical aid and tender care of neighbors could do. Mrs. Voorhis passed away Monday morning at eleven o'clock, and at five o'clock the following Tuesday, Mr. Voorhis died. The funeral of Mrs. Voorhis was held Wednesday afternoon at the Hatcher chapel, Rev. G. S. Hatcher conducting the services. Interment followed at Hilltop cemetery. Mrs. Helen Biggs Voorhis was born in Illinois on March 6, 1897, and had attained the age of 25 years at the time of her death. She came to Colorado about eight years ago and was married in this city seven years ago to Mr. Arthur Voorhis, who for the past three years has been undergoing treatment at the state hospital in Pueblo. Besides the husband, she is survived by three children, a daughter and two sons, her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Biggs. Her mother preceded her in death many years ago, as well as one brother, Earl, who died in Alamosa during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Her father, who has been spending the winter near Bayfield, arrived home Monday night in response to the sorrowful news of his daughter's death. Bereft of a husband, she met life's battles bravely, devoting her time and attention to her children with never a complaint. Hers has been a life of unceasing and unselfish care and work and it seems unfortunate that she should be taken in the bloom of health and youth. A Peculiar coincidence of the double demise is the fact that the brother-in-law, Albert George Voorhis, was born in the same state and on the same date as the other, being born in Illinois on March 6, 1891, and reaching the age of 32 years. He spent the great portion of his life in Illinois, and came to Pagosa Springs from Greeley three years ago and had since made his home here, at that time assuming the responsibilities of his unfortunate brother and successfully bore them until his untimely death. The father of the deceased, William Voorhis, passed away several years ago. His mother, Mrs. Julia A. Pedmore, arrived this evening from her home at Mitchell Nebraska. In addition to his mother and the brother at Pueblo, he is survived by another brother and one sister whose present whereabouts are unknown. His funeral services are being conducted this afternoon at the Hatcher chapel by Rev. G. S.Hatcher and interment will take place at Hilltop Cemetery. We can only extend the heart felt sympathy of a united community to the sorrowing relatives of these two splendid young citizens and neighbors.
